去る2024年2月4日午前05時01分、映像作家:中嶋 興 氏がご逝去されました.

中嶋 興氏（1941/01/11-2024/02/04）のご冥福を謹んでお祈り申し上げます.

ご家族の皆様、そして近親者の皆様方のお心が癒えますことを心よりお祈りいたします.

中嶋 興氏には、当Geek Love Projectの第1回展覧会《人と科学と現代アート＝ステレオタイプを超えてゆけ＝》（2019年 助成：アーツカウンシル東京）にご参加いただいて以来、昨年2024年まで継続的にご協力を賜りました.

2019年、風薫る5月。本展覧会の会場先である東京工業大学博物館＠大岡山（現：東京科学大学）を下見するために、中嶋興氏とご一緒したことが、つい先日のことのように思い出されます.

また、2023年1月および、2024年2月には、上映会とレクチャー、そして哲学カフェをセットにした《＃ My Life 2024 =記録... そして､目撃せよ= 》と題した対話型イベントを開催し、中嶋興氏の代表作《マイ・ライフ》(1977年-至現在)を題材に、参加者の皆様とそれぞれのナラティブや、記録について対話を行い、とても濃厚な時間を過ごすことができました.

今年2月も昨年に引き続き同シリーズの開催を目指し中嶋氏と企画を進めておりましたが、願い叶わず、此度の訃報をお伝えさせて頂く次第でごいます. 本当に残念でなりません. 最期まで拳をあげて応答してくださった中嶋興氏に深く御礼を申し上げます.

ご生前、中嶋興氏は４KやAIを用いた先端テクノロジーの進化・発展による映像メディアの規格の変遷や、その展望についても言及されていました. だからこそ、というわけではありませんが、中嶋興氏が（彼の世から）映画『マトリックス』シリーズに登場するような、次元を超えたハイパーメディアを手中に収め、「追いついて来い、待っているぞっ！」と、威勢のよい闊達な節まわしでいまも笑いながら叱咤激励してくださっているような気がしてなりません.

今年１月に御面会した際、当方のカメラをご覧になりながら、

「よく撮っている」

とおっしゃってくださったことは、アーティストの端くれとして大変嬉しく、その続きを再びお話しできるものとその日を信じておりました。だからこそ、本当に残念でなりません.

​

Time-based media の黎明期から、中嶋興氏は、ビル・ヴィオラ氏（米）Bill Viola（1951–2024）をはじめとする海外のアーティストや、バーバラ・ロンドン氏（米）Barbara London（1946–）といった名だたるキュレーターと連携・協働を行ってこられました.

​

一方で、日本のアニメーションの発展にも深く関与し、日本最古のアニメーションである《江戸写し絵》（みんわ座）を通じた次世代への教育普及にも心血を注がれました. そのアーティストとしての生き様は、西洋中心のコンテンポラリーアートの流れに単に追随するのではなく、一線を画す唯一無二のロールモデルとして、柔軟な思考と視座を示してくださったものと存じます.

​

かつてビル・ヴィオラ氏が影響を受けたという『陰陽五行』（木・火・土・金・水）をはじめ、『花風鳥月』にみられる『春夏秋冬』の移ろいにも精通していた中嶋氏は、人間の生涯を含む万物の循環する営みをカメラのファインダー越しに見つめ続けてこられました.

そんな中嶋氏が、新春の訪れを告げる立春（2月4日）に旅立たれたことは偶然とは思えません.

これまで当方が中嶋興氏とともに開催したイベントでは、

「映像とは何か？ 記録とは何か？」

といった命題をテーマに、対話を重ねてまいりました. メディアにおけるこれらの命題は複雑化するネット社会において、倫理観やコンプライアンスがより求められる時代の中で、アーカイブの真価や価値創造を含め、ますます重要視される普遍的な問いであると存じます. それ故に、これらの命題を引き続き、考察する者のひとりとして、中嶋興氏との対話のプロセスを糧に、彼の世からの問いかけに応答できるよう、今後も精進してまいります.

I still vividly remember visiting the Tokyo Institute of Technology Museum (now  Science Tokyo) at Ookayama with Ko Nakajima in May 2019 to survey the venue for that exhibition.

In January 2023 and February 2024, we held dialogical events titled "# My Life 2024 =Record... and Witness=," which included screenings, lectures, and philosophy cafés, centered on Nakajima’s masterpiece My Life (1977–present). We engaged participants in conversations about their own narratives and the nature of record-keeping.

We had planned to continue this series in February 2024 but sadly could not realize these plans due to his passing. We deeply regret this loss and express our heartfelt gratitude to Ko Nakajima, who continued to respond with strength and spirit until the very end.

​​

During his lifetime, Ko Nakajima spoke about the evolution and future prospects of video media standards, including advances in 4K and AI technology. Because of this, it feels as if Nakajima is still with us—commanding us to “catch up, I’m waiting!” in his spirited and lively manner, encouraging us with a smile.

​​

When we last met in January 2024, Nakajima complimented our camera work, saying, “You’re shooting well.” As a fellow artist, these words deeply moved me, and I hoped to continue our conversations. It is truly heartbreaking that this will no longer be possible.

From the early days of time-based media, Ko Nakajima collaborated internationally with renowned artists such as Bill Viola (1951–2024) and curators like Barbara London (1946–).

​​

He was also deeply involved in the development of Japanese animation and dedicated himself to education through Japan’s oldest animation Edo Utsushie (Minwaza), contributing to nurturing future generations. As an artist, Nakajima offered a unique and flexible perspective that stood apart from the Western-centric contemporary art scene.

Familiar with the Five Elements theory (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and the changing seasons symbolized by Kafucho-getsu (Flowers, Wind, Birds, Moon), which influenced Bill Viola, Nakajima continuously observed the cyclical nature of life and all things through his camera lens.
